Mid-Year Resolutions

The year is halfway over. Did you make New Year’s resolutions? If so, it’s time to check in, see how you are progressing. If not, no worries! Starting on January 1st is arbitrary, anyway. But if you like nice round dates, July 1st could be the perfect opportunity for you.

For your inspiration, and my accountability, here are a few of my mid-year resolutions:

  1. Publish more writing

It’s safe to say I’m still well shy of 10,000 hours spent writing. Plus, squirreling away half-assed drafts doesn’t count. I need to experience the full writing process to reap the benefits, which includes revising and editing. I shouldn’t be so concerned with my body of work anyway. Even Bukowski published crummy poems. And a lot of great ones, too.

  1. Take better care of myself

The OG resolution. Exercise. Sleep. They say to treat yourself like someone you’re responsible for helping. Like an elderly parent, or a child, or a pet. Take yourself for walks, give yourself back scratches, and put yourself to bed.

  1. Break down my walls of vulnerability and intimacy

I haven’t let anyone too close for a while. Even the people I love and the people I spend all my time with, I’ve been keeping at arms length. I can make excuses, but deep down I know it’s me. I have to be willing to be hurt, embarrassed, disappointed. Nobody will save me or fix me, and they can’t get close unless I invite them in. I find the people with the brightest spark are the ones who share their entire experience, unconditionally.

This is the conclusion. I couldn’t think of what to write, but I thought there should be one. Consider this your official notice the post is over.
